SSC Core Strategies and Benefits

Program Core Strategies
SSC is structured around twelve, evidence-based core strategies for enhancing change in individuals engaging in problem behaviors (e.g., substance abuse, criminal conduct, mental health).

  1. Multidimensional and differential assessment.
  2. Integrating education (knowledge) and treatment within a manual-guided format.
  3. Enhancing self-disclosure and awareness by facilitating the process of growth and change.
  4. Structure treatment around the stages of change.
  5. Develop an intervention relationship through motivational enhancement and therapeutic alliance.
  6. Utilizing cognitive-behavioral therapy principles and methods.
  7. Relapse and recidivism prevention.
  8. Focus on responsibility to the community and concern for the welfare and safety of others.
  9. Integrating the therapeutic and correctional.
  10. A cohesive group that elicits positive "within group" identity and prosocial attitudes.
  11. Reintegration into the community.
  12. Capitalizing on the strengths of diversity.

Program Benefits for Clients
The primary treatment program goals of relapse and recidivism prevention along with meaningful and responsible living which are attained through the intense practice and application of:

  • Cognitive-behavioral self-control and change skills to everyday living
  • Relationship skills that lead to prosocial and positive outcomes
  • Empathy and community responsibility skills that lead to self-awareness, prosocial behavior, a positive relationship with others and the community, and that promote respect for the rights, welfare and good of others and the community

Client Expectations
Each client in the program must have and own a new copy of the Participant’s Workbook which allows him/her to:

  • Apply the concepts and skills to their own unique patterns of behavior and goals for change
  • Engage in a continual process of interactive assessment to measure their change skills and the outcome of applying these skills to their ongoing daily living
  • Complete all program worksheets and assessment inventories
  • Develop a comprehensive plan for change, the Master Assessment Plan, to be completed by the end of the first month or eighth session of program participation
  • Self-assessment at the end of each session to rate level of learning of the concepts and skills presented
