What is Nursing? Exploring Theory and Practice
Exploring Theory and Practice

Third Edition

June 2013 | 224 pages | Learning Matters

This book helps new nursing students, and those applying to nursing programmes, understand what being a nurse is all about. It explores the essential issues, processes and theories of nursing practice, and is therefore an ideal introductory text as you start your nursing programme, or as pre-course reading.

This revised edition includes a new first chapter on being a nursing student, with insights from students themselves, and explains what will be expected of you in the new all-degree programmes. Interviews with real nurses in each of the fields of practice gives you an important view into the real world of nursing.

  • The revised third edition includes a new chapter on being a nursing student, with student tips and stories
  • Updated with, and linked to, the new NMC Standards and Essential Skills Clusters for degree-level education
  • Activities, case studies and scenarios helps you apply theory to practice
  • Particularly suitable for first-year students and those applying to pre-registration programmes

This book is part of the Transforming Nursing Practice Series, the first series of books designed to help students meet the requirements of the NMC Standards and Essential Skills Clusters for the new degree programmes.

This is a good book for nursing students, it is set out well and is easy to understand. This book also covers how to apply for a job once qualified as a nurse. The sections detailing which NMC standards and Essential Skills clusters are met is very useful. I would recommend this book to both students and Lecturers

This is a really good learning tool for the students working towards a degree in Nursing, whether that is pre registration or post registration, undergrad or post grad. The case studies are thought provoking and relate well to clinical practice. The activities make the reader become active in the learning and they have to go beyond what is provided in the text of the book.

A good resource for those interested in nursing as it explores what it means to be a nurse so helps potential students in the decision if this is the right pathway for them. I recommend this to potential candidates at open days and initial enquiries. The new chapter on tips for students is excellent

This book has an easy read and logical format for new first year students to gain an insight into the world of nursing. With case studies and scenarios making it more real for the students.
as it is linked for the new domains of nursing it is also a useful additional reading for new mentors undertaking their mentorship qualification or mentors linked to universities that are just undertaking the new degree course and are unfamiliar with the new domains
