Sociology for Social Work
An Introduction

November 2010 | 280 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

Introducing the social work student to the field of sociology, this book illustrates how sociology is connected to and fundamental to effective social work practice. Each chapter applies theory to practice and is uniquely co-written by a sociologist, social worker, and service user. A wide range of topics and subjects relevant to social work are covered, including:

  • Gender
  • Class
  • Ethnicity and race
  • Aging
  • Health
  • Intimacies
  • Social exclusion
  • Crime and deviance
  • Communities
  • Disability

Every chapter of the book includes further case studies, along with lots of clear definitions of terms and reflection points, making this book the essential introductory text for all social work students.

A good reader in introduction to the concepts of sociology relevant to social work.

In my role as Practice Educator I have used this book as a source to refresh my knowledge etc within this area as well as directing students to read specific chapters.

The book is clearly set out, chapters are well defined, the content is structured with excellent definitions and activities (used in group sessions to stimualte discussion). The 'Lived Experience' at the end of each chapter was a welcome addition to academic texts, helping students make the link with 'the real world'.

The book is useful to students on the FD Care Studies course as a supplementary book. The chapters on different topics are informative and thought provoking for students and the activities are useful for group/class discussion. It is of more use to those in the social care field but only marginally for those in health. Therefore it is to be nominated as supplemental reading rather than essential.

I like the approach taken in the book of using practitioners and service-users as well as academics. Its topics are relevant for a wider audience than just social work.
