As a result, they produce a detailed, practice-oriented book that is indeed beneficial to "researchers who are new to research with children" (p. xii) and which at the same time reminds experienced researchers to conduct research with children in ways that value their lives and social situations.

This books guides the apprentice in research with children through various ethical, methodological and practical issues in a very clear and pedagogic manner. The authors demonstrate practical experience dealing with complex situations. The examples of real research are very good to provoke critical thinking.
Really Useful with dissertation students.
This book contains a wide range of activities and answers to guide students through the research process. There are some excellent vignettes in the chapter on ethics and another good chapter on informed consent/children's capacity to make decisions. Students will find the examples of an information letter and consent form helpful in starting their project. Guidance is given on how to design questionnaires and structured interviews, planning unstructured interviews and participatory methods. There is a helpful step-by-step guide to thematic analysis but an example using a section of script could perhaps have been included to aid understanding.
My sense is that the authors of this book have carefully considered the other work that is available on research with children and written a book that can secure its own distinctive place and value. An undoubted strength is its emphasis on research with vulnerable groups of children and young people, questions of recruitment, and method selection. The activities are particularly helpful and thought provoking for even experienced researchers.
A good book but not as relevant to the course that i am teaching as I had hoped. Useful for practitioners planning or carrying out research with children.
