Pain is a challenging area to understand for any healthcare professional, and quality training on the subject is required if nurses are to provide effective pain management and person-centred care.
Based on the curriculum developed by the International Association for the Study of Pain, this book offers an essential guide to managing pain. Beginning with an examination of the biology of pain, it then goes on to consider pain management across the life course, looking at key topics including acute pain, cancer pain and pharmacology. Case scenarios are included throughout the book to help readers apply the knowledge they have learned to their own practice.

Excellent reading for both qualified nurses and students
I really enjoyed this book - it gives an easy-to-read, yet comprehensive overview of pain management in palliative care, providing an excellent resource to many students who work within palliative and hospice care on the NMP course. Clinically I practice as a nurse consultant in children's palliative care - children are often overlooked in such texts so I was delighted to see that children are a recurrent feature of this text! I am recommending it to those professionals practicing in relevant clinical areas.
This book engages the reader through its easy to follow text and supportive diagrams. Providing learning outcomes for each chapter enables the reader to dip in and out of the book as needed using the reflective exercises to ensure they have understood the chapter. As a lecturer in pain management I would recommend this book to both pre registration and post registration nurses.
This is now recommended reading on our pain and symptom control module . It is a really good basic text and covers all aspects of this module providing an excellent foundation.
It is really useful for our students as their 'go to' book (from which they can develop thier reading in more depth dependant on the specific subject on the programme.)
As we could not get it in to the handbook this time but suggested it to our students and asked them to feedback. Those who have read/bought it have found it to be most helpful.
They tell us that it is the easy read style, recommended reading, along with the excellent psychological aspects that make it so useful.
We will definately have it in our handbooks as essential reading next year.

Good book, discussed the essentail aspects of pain management.
I have found that this book is ideally aimed at quailfied staff nurses. I am therefore recommending for staff working in an area where pain managment is key.
