Qualitative Researching with Text, Image and Sound
A Practical Handbook for Social Research
- Martin W Bauer - London School of Economics and Political Science, UK
- George Gaskell - London School of Economics, UK
It's a useful source for my graduate students.
Appropriate for MA (research) students to complement main coursebooks, which focus on quantitative methods.
The book is written in a very didactic style. It gives a short overview of each method at the beginning of each chapter, and then goes into the details following a step-by-step structure. The examples used are relevant and clear.
In addition, the authors problematise the different methods, which triggers critical thinking and makes the reader question the methods, rather than taking them from granted.
The glossary is extremely useful, especially for students who are not familiar with some of these methods.
Excellent textbook for those interested in using arts based research methods
good for the students from broadcasting journalism to learn how to analysis the data of image, video and sound.I think it is suitable to use this book as the essential textbook.I'll try it in my class.
A well-structured practical guide, in which the chapter authors link theory and method, enabling undergraduates to obtain a sense of how different methods are used in real qualitative research.
Recommended for those using arts based research methods in their studies
This edited volume will serve as a good qualitative methods manual, especially to students and researchers interested in using some of the new or less used qualitative methods. A volume which includes well organised essays on methods such as 'video, film and photographs as research documents,' 'analysis of conversation and talk,' and 'analysing noise and music as social data,' is a real treat.
Covers some broad and big concepts clearly.
