In Poland, where I was doing the work of an academic teacher , there is a huge gap in the field of publishing . So far, in my teaching I used an earlier publication by this author published in 1991. The present work refers to the stages of the counseling process and very clearly characterizes them . It also contains excellent exercises that can be used for both the students and advisors in the process of self-education. In addition to the characteristics of the stages of counselling author also discusses specific issues such as multicultural and gender aware counselling . The modern approach is also reflected in the issues raised in chapter written by Jane Evans and dedicated to using technology in counseling . The idea of the book is highly humanistic , which faithfully reproduced the last chapter : "Becoming more skilled and human ."
I highly recommend this work to all counsellors and students of psychology.

I like this authors systematic style of presenting counselling technique. Students find it easy to understand and follow in terms of developingcounselling and communication skills wtih their clients. I have included on core reading lists and recommended to the library.
This is a really good book to find out all about counselling. The chapters follow a logical progression and the topics are introduced in an accessible way. I liked the activities and examples and comprehensive glossary. The annotated bibliography and reference list are extremely useful for choosing further reading. The only downside is that the chapter outcomes and headers are in a very pale text.
An essential text for any trainer or trainee in counselling skills. An excellent all-rounder for practictioners to learn and build on their counselling skills. This is a book that every counsellor should have on their shelf.
One of the best skills texts on the market, giving good practical grounding for trainees and more specialist information for practitioners. It appeals across academic levels, setting beginners on the path but also tackling ongoing development. Recommended to undergrad and postgrad alike!
