Funding Your Open Access Research

Open access publishing is an author pays model, in which the published research is freely accessible to all. The cost to publish varies per journal and you can learn more about the Article Processing Charge (APC) for each journal in their submission guidelines.

Types of funding

Many funding bodies and institutions require that the work they support is made publicly available through a suitable repository. Sage’s open access publishing programme, Open Access agreements and author archiving policies allow our authors to comply with the various requirements stipulated by the major funding bodies or an author's institution.

  • Open Access Agreements; the APC may be covered by an open access agreement with your institution
  • Waivers; you may be eligible for an APC waiver. Requests will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and priority for partial and full waivers will be given to authors who reside in the countries described by the Research4Life program

Types of OA Publishing

At Sage we support many different types of OA publishing.

  • Sage Choice; publish open access in subscription-based journals
  • Pure Gold OA journals; publish in open access journals where all the content is open access for an article processing charge
  • Green Open Access Archiving; Sage supports green open access archiving for authors publishing in traditional subscription journals
