Ethics and Education Research

October 2014 | 208 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

Part of the popular BERA/SAGE Research Methods in Education series, this is the first book to specifically focus on the ethics of Education research. Drawn from the authors’ experiences in the UK, Australia and mainland Europe and with contributions from across the globe, this clear and accessible book includes a wide range of examples

The authors show how to:

  • identify ethical issues which may arise with any research project
  • gain informed consent
  • provide information in the right way to participants
  • present and disseminate findings in line with ethical guidelines

All researchers, irrespective of whether they are postgraduate students, practising teachers or seasoned academics, will find this book extremely valuable for its rigorous and critical discussion of theory and its strong practical focus.

Rachel Brooks is Professor of Sociology and Head of the Sociology Department at the University of Surrey, UK.

Kitty te Riele is Principal Research Fellow in the Victoria Institute for Education, Diversity and Lifelong Learning, at Victoria University in Australia.

Interesting, thought provoking and much needed book. Would have loved even more extensive sections on chapters 4-8 on the 'doing' of ethical research. The chapter on the ethics of dissemination makes a very valuable contribution to an oft neglected aspect of research ethics. Would have welcomed more on the ethics of literature reviews.

Ethics are often included in research texts but rarely is there a focus on this essential part of any programme where evaluating or carrying out research is a key component. Good to see that this has been addressed here

This book was initially identified as a support for Professionally Enquiry which is now being divided into two separate but connected courses of study, Critical Reading and Writing and Research Methodology. This will be an essential text from the point of view of reading and critically analyzing papers and the methodologies used by other authors. It is also essential to highlight the necessity to be ethically aware throughout educational study. This book will be an excellent support for not only these students but for final year MA and Diploma students as part of their studies before entering the profession as well as Work Based Project and Dissertation students who need to be mindful of ethical issues throughout their project as opposed to simply a 'hoop to be jumped through'.
