Action Research in Nursing and Healthcare

December 2011 | 256 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

Action Research is one of the most popular research strategies in nursing and healthcare. It is widely used by practitioners who want to better understand and undertake their work and students who need to do a research project for their course. AR is evidence-based and links directly to practice, making it the ideal method for a researcher in these fields.

This book introduces readers to Action Research by presenting its key concepts and backing them up with practical examples throughout, often drawn from the authors' own extensive experience. Topics include:

  • Action research to advance patient care
  • Collaborative working
  • Ethics
  • Participatory Action Research
  • Writing up and disseminating projects

Williamson, Bellman, and Webster – leading figures in the field - provide practical advice for using Action Research in healthcare settings, with patients and alongside other practitioners. Their book presents a flexible approach that can be adapted to researchers' real needs.

This is a well-structured, simple yet informative book focussing upon action research. It is presented in an “easy to read” manner and the reflective activities help to focus the reader’s thoughts. This is an area of research which is dynamic and very pertinent in relation to health care.

This is an excellent text, very easy to navigate through and contains a wealth of information that will be very useful to the novice and experienced researcher alike. The application of action research in Nursing seems a very logical process and this text will support the first steps in the process but will also provide a rapid easy reference for the more experienced practitioner.
This book I feel will support the novice researcher and will enable them to establish a sound methodological background thus supporting the exploration of care, that can only lead to improved and quality care in practice.
I would certainly suggest this is a vital text for the research element in post graduate nursing studies.

Helped to motivate me get started on my action reserch project.
Good introduction to topic , easy to read , which is unusal for academic texts .
Liked the snese that the text develops beyond discussion surrounding research and moves into the application of action research in the clinical setting. Useful for my own use , but would be equally useful with students.

Comprehensive account of this methodology including the dilemmas. Good rationale section as to why select action research. Strong application to practice. Useful section on presenting proposals to others. Welcoming binding and size to prompt reading from students new to subject area.

I see this book as supporting Masters students who are considering an AR approach to their dissertation or even to our ug students wrertling with it in their research module.

I'm going to suggest as a purchase to our Library
