Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
Foundations for Practice

Third Edition
  • Frank Wills - University of Wales College, Newport, University of South Wales, UK
  • Diana Sanders - Counselling Psychologist and BABCP Accredited Cognitive Psychotherapist in Independent Practice, Oxford

November 2012 | 352 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

In their established introduction to contemporary CBT theory and practice, Diana Sanders and Frank Wills show how therapeutic change takes place across a network of cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning. They explain the central concepts of CBT and illustrate - with numerous case examples - how these can effectively be put into practice at each stage of the therapeutic process. The revised book now includes:

  • Recent developments in CBT, i.e., new settings and applications including guided self-help, computerized CBT, IAPT & stepped care
  • Two brand new chapters on mindfulness and increasing access to CBT
  • Extra case studies, chapter previews, exercises and further reading, plus an appendix of further resources
  • Coverage of a wider range of client issues

This continues to be the ideal companion for those working - or training to work - in the psychological therapies and mental health.

This is a really 'learner' friendly and easy to read/understand book. I particularly like the case studies throughout. The additional information regarding Mindfulness and the new wave of CBT is of real interest.

Book will be an additional and welcome advisory to the psychosocial interventions unit currently offered. It may also be considered as one that could be utilised in the pre-registration nursing (mental health) programme.

The book is a very nice foundation for the introduction of CBT. However, the specific topic of my course is CBT in chronic pain. There are some hints to CBT in chronic pain in the book, but no detailed descriptions for this topic. Therefore, the book is recommanded for the first part of the course, but only supplementary for the detailed seminars for specific syndromes (i.e. fibromyalgia, migraine, chronic back pain etc.).

An excellent updated overview of the shape of current CBT. I'm recommending this as a core-text for our PGC CBT course.

This is a really good book that addresses much of the curiculum of the CBT modules we offer.
I personally liked the level of detail and applicability to practice of the content. This book will be of use for novice and experienced practitioners and I feel it is a good resource for any therapist.

An interesting book for use in therapeutic interventions session with students. A little advanced for 2nd year student nurses (which is the module i use it for), but very good for informing assignments and when in practice. Some students who have an interest in the topic area have really found it useful. I will continue to take it to the session for people to look through and make their own decision.

this book provides student midwives with an introduction to the CBT. this is something that has increasing coverage and will be something that many patients will be experiencing. This book will enhance the student undersatnding and can only enhance the impact of care provision for the maternity services
