This text provides a helpful, basic introduction to a range of practices/concepts for those new to teaching in HE.
This text is a good supportive text for students in preparing their activities within a PGCert Ed. Its a helpful, how to guide, providing a useful checklist for the novice teacher in HEI. It encourages the student to try different approaches and set up theiur learning more effectively
A good book to read. Good and constructive ideas in the process and delivery of teaching
This is a text for dipping into - tips, wisdom, ideas and examples. It covers the practicalities of how to teach rather than any theory behind it. Therefore it's an introduction, but a comprehensive one, best for doctoral students who help out with teaching and who are just starting out.
There is a rare and valuable chapter on giving seminars to peers, a sometimes forgotten element of teaching. The chapter on teaching aids is also useful, with ideas for the many media sources that are now available for classrooms, and considers their uses and (dis)advantages.
The format is appealing, with checklists and reflective text boxes, good for ideas if a new teacher is wondering what to do.
Excellent writing style/approach, allowed the user to engage with the subject matter. The use of top-tips, voice of experience, words of warning and checklists were also innovative and practical in terms of reflecting real-life experiences that would/could be encountered in HE teaching. Simple things like glossary, further reading and exercises all add to the reading experience and clearly support the new lecturer in HE. Overall a very good text, and I will certainly recommend it to my students and colleagues.
Found the 'voice of experience' sections particularly useful.
Very useful textbook for an MSc Professional and Higher Education Module - Current Issues in Higher Education- I particularly liked the writing style and the way the authors approached topics such as preparing seminars. I will recommend this text. This text might also be useful for Professional Doctorate students undertaking taught modules in Advancing Professional Practice.
This is an excellent book for a young academic and I would recommend. I have not adopted it for my course as it’s not appropriate, but rather ordered an inspection copy for myself to help with my teaching.
Good for support reading;suitable for PGCE students.
