Curriculum Theory & Development
"Vic Kelly's writing is always concise and informative, but also at times challenging."
"A most comprehensive text that takes the reader beyond content/balance issues values, beliefs and assumptions on the curriculum."
This is the Sixth Edition of a book that has been regularly revised and updated since it was first published in 1977. A.V. Kelly's now classic work focuses on the philosophical and political dimensions of curriculum, and especially on the implications for schools and societies of various forms of curriculum.
The author outlines what form a curriculum should take if it is concerned to promote a genuine form of education for a genuinely democratic society. Kelly summarizes and explains the main aspects of curriculum theory, and shows how these can and should be translated into practice, in order to create an educational and democratic curriculum for all schools at all levels.
The author also seeks to show that the politicization of the school curriculum has led to the establishment of policies and practices which demonstrate a failure to understand these principles of curriculum theory and practice. As a result, policies and practices have been implemented which fall short of being adequate.
In view of the rapid pace of educational change imposed by various governments over the last 35 years, including New Labor, this book is now more relevant than ever.
This is one of the key texts used on our Curriculum Design and Development module. It is a comprehensive text yet written in an accessible style for the student.
This is a wonderful text for those who are interested in the development of curricula in the broadest sense. There is considerable discussion of the practical, educational and political implications of curriculum policy and curriculum development. Kelly also explores the nature of knowledge and the curriculum. The text is completed with an excellent chapter on democracy and the curriculum.
Kelly presents the history of curriculum, together with comprehensive arguments and discussion of current curriculum policies, which make this a very educational, interesting text for those developing knowledge of curriculum, and for those interested in curriculum change.
A 'classic' text providing the reader with a well balanced and challenging discussion of curricula. This is a book I return to again and again.
the writer discusses many issues which surround the use of curriculum and would be a good book to support any educational degree
Although this book focuses on schools rather than HE it has useful content and is at the right academic level for the M.Ed programme
This book is an essential contribution to curriculum studies in primary education. More than that, the author introduces the reader to the fundamental debates around knowledge, values, pedagogy, assessment and curriculum. For any primary teacher who cares about the development of young children, this is a classic text that is even more relevant now that it was when the first edition was published. I will be recommending it to my students as a valuable tool in their search for clarity about key education debates.
a clear and well presented study aid in a very complex field of education. complimented work done at level 5 dtlls.
