Young Children's Thinking
- Marion Dowling - Early Years Consultant
Thanks to its clear links between theory and practice, this highly accessible book will be valuable to early childhood practitioners, teachers and students. The author explores the development of children's thinking from 0-7 years, and shares the implications of these developments for practice in the home, Early Years settings and schools.
The book includes:
- Case studies
- Professional checkpoints to help reflection
- Practical suggestions
- Guidance on how to involve parents
- Suggested further reading
- Questions for discussion
It will be a great asset for students on Early Years Foundation Degrees, Early Years Initial Teacher Education and Early Childhood Studies courses.
Excellent book which looks at children's thinking. The creative section is an excellent read.
A wonderful book for all who really care about young children and how they develop and learn. Recommended for Foundation Degree students.
This book has a helpful format that smoothly balances theoretical perspectives with practical implications. Furthermore addressing different age groups is also valuable.
It will appeal to a wide range of readers as it touches on some quite challenging theories that can be followed up for those keen to develop/deepen their understanding.
It will contribute to students' critical thinking as at times the text explores some quite sensitive or controversial themes, e.g. Gerba p65.
There is a strong and up-to-date research basis that also touches on some international views.
The Intentions and Summary sections are comprehensively exploratory informing readers of the content. The Reflective points are pitched well too to encourage some effective reflection and professional consideration.
I will recommend this book for additional reading on both PGCE and UG courses, especially those exploring child development or creativity/problem solving.

This will become a recommended reading text on modules in our Foundation Degree in Teaching and Learning Support. The focus on thinking skills is welcome.
This book has very cleverly woven together both deep theory and good practice. For Foundation Degree students and students on placements this is the ideal combination.
Marion Dowling's style is genuine and enthusiastic, which is perfect for motivating and inspiring students. I'm thrilled to be able to take this book to the students this semester (good timing!)
An interesting book which challenges the reader to consider childrens views
