Julie Fennell is an associate professor of Sociology at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. Her research primarily focuses on sexuality and gender. She has done extensive studies on unintended pregnancy and contraceptive use in the United States, as well as on the North American BDSM (Bondage & Discipline/Dominance & submission/Sadism & Masochism) subculture. She is particularly interested in deviance and the framing of social (in)equality in the context of deviant subcultures.
