Internet Research Skills
- Niall Ó Dochartaigh - National University of Ireland, Ireland
Internet Research Skills is a clear, concise guide to effective online research for social science and humanities students. The first half of the book deals with publications online, devoting separate chapters to academic articles, books, official publications and news sources, which form the core secondary sources for social science research. The second half of the book deals with the open web, a vast and confusing realm of materials, many of which have no direct print counterpart.
The Third Edition has been updated throughout and now includes:
- Coverage of cutting edge online services as well as newly developed approaches to using online materials
- A new chapter on organizing your research and internet research methods
- Additional material on the use of social networks for research
- Illustrations, examples and short exercises to help you put what you learn into practice
Internet Research Skills is an invaluable guide for undergraduate students carrying out research projects and for graduate students working on theses and dissertations.
'Ó Dochartaigh has produced an exceptionally useful resource for finding material that a student, undergraduate or postgraduate, might need to find in the course of their studies. The clarity with which it is written and the obvious enthusiasm of the author makes the book an interesting read. A fine achievement'
-Dr Christopher Wibberley, Faculty of Health, Psychology & Social Care, Manchester Metropolitan University
The book is focused on the British situation, the system of our libraries (Austria) is too different.
I have recommended this to first years just to get them used to the idea that researching is not quite as straightforward as they think.
I feel it will be most useful, however, to the postgraduate students that I deal with and it has definitely been helpful to me with ideas on how to refine searches.
A good reference for students to learn about the internet skills. The book avoids excessive details; presents the key facts backed up with relevant internet sites to understand the necessary skills. It will appeal to students and scientists from all disciples.
Was not quite what I was expecting. Interesting but probably not useful for our students.
Very helpful and up to date approach. Good broad coverage of key issues and practical application. Works well for both UG and PG
An excellent text which will serve as a very helpful companion for students undertaking web based research associated with literature review work. We plan to recommend this text for students who are using web based reserarch in their dissertation studies.
An excellent book to know how to find resources on tbe Internet. The book is truly vital for effectively using electonic resources. The author has done a remarkable job by supporting each chapter with a variety of practical excersises. It is an invaluable reference for students and researchers to improve their internet skills.
