Joseph B. Walther (Ph.D., M.A., and B.A., University of Arizona) teaches and conducts research in how people use communication cues—verbal and nonverbal—to transmit and construct their impressions and relationships, especially via technology. His research examines the social dynamics of new communication technology in interpersonal, group, organizational, and educational settings, where there are fewer and different cues available. He is internationally recognized as the leading US scholar doing work in computer-mediated communication and behavior.. He is currently the director of the Center for Information Technology and Society at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he holds the Mark and Susan Bertelsen Chair in Technology and Society. A Fellow of the International Communication Association, and a National Communication Association Distinguished Scholar, his work has appeared in The Handbook of Interpersonal Communication, 3/e and 4/e (SAGE), Distributed Work (MIT Press), Communication Technology and Society (Hampton Press), Human Communication Research, Communication Research, Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Journal of Organizational Computing, and Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, among others.
