SAGE Publishing text, Understanding Narrative Inquiry, receives Outstanding Publication Award

June 13, 2017

SAGE Publishing is delighted to announce that Understanding Narrative Inquiry: The Crafting and Analysis of Stories as Research, by Dr. Jeong-Hee Kim, has received the Outstanding Publication Award from the Narrative Research Special Interest Group (SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). The award honors research-based texts dedicated to advancing the educational process through research or scholarly inquiry.

Published in 2016, the text guides readers through the entire process of narrative inquiry, an interdisciplinary form of qualitative research that pursues a narrative way of knowing by exploring the narratives or stories of participants. Understanding Narrative Inquiry features a wide range of narrative research genres such as autobiography/autoethnography, oral history and life story/life history, emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of the field and coverage of the historical, theoretical and analytical aspects of each genre. Additionally, it presents contemporary issues in the field for a community of social science researchers and students, including anthropologists, psychologists, sociologists, and more.

"I’m deeply honored and humbled to receive this award as to me, it means that more than a decade of my thinking with narrative inquiry has been acknowledged by the narrative research community,” said Kim.

Dr. Kim is a Professor of Curriculum Studies at Texas Tech University. She is a curriculum theorist, teacher educator and narrative inquiry methodologist who currently teaches graduate level courses on curriculum theory, narrative inquiry and action research in education.

“My book is very special to me because it documents my own story of becoming a narrative inquirer including the challenges and struggles that I experienced during my academic journey,” continued Kim. “By sharing my own vulnerabilities, I wanted to let readers know that narrative inquiry begins with oneself, one’s untold story, and one’s way of being.”

“Dr. Jeong-Hee Kim draws on numerous narrative traditions in ways that weave them together and develops an understanding for individuals as they conduct narrative research,” said Dr. Shaun Murphy, Narrative Research SIG Outstanding Dissertation Award Committee Chair. “She uses narratives, and inquires into them, to provide context and develop meaning for each chapter. Dr. Kim takes up diverse ideas of narrative research and supports researchers in their use of various strategies and techniques in field text (data) collection and analysis within the framework of narrative research. She considers the complexity of the research methodology in its relationship to theory."

“We are thrilled that a SAGE title was recognized for this award,” said Helen Salmon, the acquisitions editor who worked with Dr. Kim to develop the text. “This is exactly the type of quality, engaged scholarship that we hope is the hallmark of our research methods publishing at SAGE.”
