We commit to signing a more diverse array of authors for both first editions and for revisions of existing titles with new coauthors onboard. We have collected available data from professional and academic associations that track faculty diversity, and we want our author communities to reflect the academic instructor communities we support.
We have created an anonymized survey tool that asks authors to self-report on their race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation, among other identity facets. We will continue to send out the survey to new authors as they sign with Sage. This allows us to collect data about our authors (while preserving their privacy), establish baselines, and track progress against ambitious and concrete goals for each of our lists. Our goal is to more-than-double the number of BIPOC authors and those who identify as LGBTQIA+ by 2025, as well as to achieve 50% women authors on every list (we have met or exceeded this last goal within some disciplines, but we want to make more progress in others).
We provide Acquisitions Editors with resources for recruiting a more diverse candidate pool of author prospects and contributors through workshops, trainings with experts, sharing of best practices, and monitoring overall progress.
