SAGE Founder Sara Miller McCune Honored by Bath and Cardiff Universities

August 4, 2014

London, UK - SAGE is delighted to announce that its founder and executive chairman Sara Miller McCune was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from Bath University and an honorary fellowship from Cardiff University.

Ms. McCune was honored for her esteemed work and contribution to the field of social sciences not only through the global publishing goals of SAGE, but also through her personal philanthropic work in various global communities.

Speaking at the ceremony in Bath, Professor Colin B. Grant remarked:

“The wisdom of Sara Miller McCune does not stop in regards to founding one of the leading academic publishing houses in the world; in addition she is equally well known for her philanthropic works. Sara has had, and continues to have, an esteemed career both through her work in publishing and her wider philanthropic goals being an ‘agent of change in society by supporting the growth of social capital’. We were delighted to present her to our Chancellor to receive the degree of Doctor of Letters, in light of her work, of which she is most eminently worthy.”

Since SAGE’s founding in 1965, the independent academic publisher has been guided by Ms. McCune’s entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering dedication to education. Central to this motivating spirit is the passionate belief in flourishing academic programs, the wide dissemination of quality research, and personal support of authors in emerging fields of study.

Reflecting her long-standing interest in philanthropy, especially in promoting world justice, Ms. McCune is co-founder and president of the McCune Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Ventura County, California, where SAGE’s home office is based. The foundation supports productive change through building social capital in two counties on California’s Central Coast. In 2007, Ms. McCune founded the Miller-McCune Center for Research, Media and Public Policy, which publishes the award-winning magazine Pacific Standard.

In 2005, the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association at the University of California, Santa Barbara presented Ms. McCune with an Honorary Alumni and Life Membership award. In 2012, she received an honorary doctorate from her alma mater, Queens College, for her visionary work as publisher, philanthropist, and entrepreneur.
