Media Literacy
- W. James Potter - University of California, Santa Barbara, USA
Engaging, accessible and relevant. Potter's Media Literacy is a panacea for our time not just the classroom.
Potter's Media Literacy has been a standard for years, and for good reason. It makes the subject easy to digest for students still deciding if a career in media is right for them. But for students who won't necessarily work in the field, it helps them to think about being better consumers of media, which may be an even more important goal of educators in a mass media program.
At a time where people struggle to sort through all of the content provided by the media, Potter's book does an exemplary job of demonstrating the importance of becoming media literate and providing the tools needed to increase those skills. His text covers a wide range of topics that allow readers to understand how to process the content they consume.
This is an excellent book for introducing our future media consumers and practitioners to the concepts and need for informed media literacy.
Over the years, Potter's voice has remained consistent and constructive in presenting and analyzing concepts in our ever-changing media landscape. I find it the most useful source for helping students understand what they’re consuming on a daily basis.
