A excellent resource, happy to recommend for my masters students.
This is one of the very best books on qualitative research that I have come across. Its account of the foundations of qualitative research is unusually clear and highly engaging. The chapters on design, sampling and fieldwork are very informative and practical. The clear distinctions between purpose, process and practicalities of interviews and focus groups are useful. The chapters on analysis, generalisation and writing up are particularly strong and will definitely give students the confidence to undertake qualitative research without undue fear.

My sense of this text is that it will assist my counselling students that there is something to be gained from embracing qualitative research as a highly important part of their develipment as professionals. For the past two years there appears to have been something of an uphill struggle in convincing students on our courses that research is not only useful but further it is their obligation as fledgling professionals in a field that is moving inexorably toward full professionalisation.

I have had some feedback already from my MSc Dissertation students who had look at the inspection copy. All were very positive about its contents. They particularly liked the systematic approach that follows the research process in a logical order. They described it as 'nice and easy' to read. The epistemological information 'was as simplified as it could be'. My own view is that it is an excellent text, and one I'll be adopting for the 'Research for Social Work' module that I teach.

This book is well written. Since i got my hands on this book, i have used it less compared to my peers and students as it so helpful seemingly not to me alone. As a result, i have consulted our library to have this book bought.

Many text books explain quantitative research methods and some detail qualitative methods, however rarely are the research practices given the same degree of detail. This book will prove to be an excellent resource for any student undertaking a dissertation, regardless of their discipline. The rationale for and the stages of designing and delivering on qualitative research are clearly and succinctly laid out in the pages of this book.
